DESCRIPTION:Although the Botanical Gardens in the heart of Basel?s Old Town are not large\, they are home to a wealth of botanical diversity in themed greenhouses\, outdoor areas and hidden corners. Animals also live in the Tropical and Cloud Forest House. Today\, over 7\,500 different plant species from all the major habitats on Earth thrive in the garden. That is almost three times as many species as occur in the wild in Central Europe. SUMMARY:Saturday\, 5 September 2026: Sketchcrawl Basel at a Singspiel rehearsal
DESCRIPTION:Photo: The Erlacherhof without the set for the production \n  \nWe have been invited to sketch during the rehearsal of the Singspiel *Die Fischerin* (1782) by Corona Schr?ter and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It will be accompanied by guitar and harpsichord. A small ad hoc ensemble has enthusiastically set about breathing life into these songs at selected locations where Goethe once stayed. Anyone who wishes to do so can also sketch during the performance in the evening. \n  \n1. Rehearsal\nWe?ll meet at the Erlacherhof in St. Johann\, which Goethe visited twice. This is where some of the rehearsals will take place\, as well as the final act of the performance in the evening. Although we?ll be sketching against a stylish backdrop\, the songs only last a few minutes\, so the performers will be changing positions frequently. This makes sketching quite challenging. \nMeeting point\n3.00 pm Erlacherhof\, St. Johanns-Vorstadt 17 (in the courtyard)\, Basel\nDuration until approx. 5.00 pm\, followed by a look at our sketches \n  \n2. Performance\n \nThe Singspiel will be performed from 8.00 pm until around 9.00 pm and takes the form of a promenade from St. Johanns-Rheinweg via various stops in St. Johann to the Erlacherhof\, where\, amongst other things\, the first musical setting of Goethe?s *Erlk?nig* will be performed. On the Rhine\, weidling boatmen will be incorporated into the proceedings. At around 8.30 pm\, dusk will slowly begin to fall and the finale of the performance will take place in the evening atmosphere by candlelight. \nIf you?d like to sketch during the performance\, you could head to the first station on your own as soon as the concert begins at 8.00 pm. This is in a different location to the meeting point for concert-goers\, so you?ll have time to settle in and sketch the first scene. Please send me a brief email to herrat-usk@bluewin.ch\, and I?ll send you the location of the first station and put you in touch with the artistic director\, Helena Langewitz\, so that you can be added to the guest list. \n  \nThe ensemble is very keen to receive sketches from the rehearsal or performance\, especially as Goethe himself also used to draw. I would then organise this for you. Please send me a sketch in high-resolution image format to my email address given above. The quality of the sketch doesn?t matter. DESCRIPTION:Theaterplatz is the hub of City Climate Day\, with information and food stalls. Here\, you can sketch scenes featuring the people taking part. The theatre\, its surroundings and the Serra sculpture also provide some great backdrops. \nCity Climate Day invites everyone to discover together how Basel can remain a liveable and cool city in the future. It highlights what is already being done in Basel to improve the urban climate and shows how each and every one of us can take action. The programme includes guided tours\, talks\, hands-on activities\, films and a drinks reception. The focus is on collective action: experiencing knowledge\, sharing ideas and initiating concrete projects ? this creates a ?green trail? that has an impact beyond the day itself. The event is aimed at experts and urban climate stakeholders as well as the general public\, families and students. \nThe Canton of Basel-Stadt is organising this event. DESCRIPTION:Basel?s Marktplatz is a major construction site due to track works and the refurbishment of the tram stop. No trams have been running here since the beginning of July and will remain suspended until 6 September ? and this is on Europe?s busiest tram route. DESCRIPTION:Please note: Brought forward to the morning due to the extreme heat  \nAs is well known\, yodelling festivals are celebrated with spontaneous group yodelling\, singing and alphorn playing\, combined with flag-waving in the alleys of the festival grounds. The festival grounds are divided into three zones: the Yodelling Village on Petersplatz\, the Yodelling Mile by the adjacent Petersgraben\, and the ?Yodelling Hill? (i.e. the old town alleys). There will be a large number of small and larger festival bars and stalls throughout the area to cater for everyone at the Swiss Festival. An overview of the festival grounds can be found on the site map (link to site map). Access to the festival grounds is generally free. \nWe?ll meet in front of St Peter?s Church. Subjects to sketch can be found directly opposite on Petersplatz\, where the ?Yodelling Village? is located\, featuring the open-air stage of the Basler Kantonalbank (BKB). \nFor anyone who?d like to sketch alphorn players\, I recommend the rehearsal area for alphorn performances at the Holbeinschulhaus\, Pausenplatz\, Kanonengasse 9. DESCRIPTION:Station Circus at Dreispitz\, a temporary use project now in its 12th year featuring a big top\, old circus and site huts\, and an old tram\, is a place brimming with creative imagination. \nNormally\, the site is closed to the public outside performance times. This afternoon\, however\, a member of the team opens the gate for us and we are made to feel very welcome to draw. The team running the site is also very keen to see our drawings. \nThis venue for contemporary circus invites international and Swiss circus companies to perform and offers circus artists space to train and rehearse. The project is supported by the Station Circus association\, which is also committed to the further development of circus culture in Switzerland. DESCRIPTION:At St. Johann railway station\, behind the ?Stellwerk?\, there is a fascinating spot. In the lovingly landscaped ?Il Giardino Urbano?\, you can wander along the winding path at any time and linger on garden furniture beside old tracks and carriages\, cosily nestled amongst the greenery\, with a view of the steam rising from the waste incineration plant in the distance. \nThe view from the bridge\, accessible by lift\, is also well worth a visit. The former Stellwerk is now an attractive workplace and a hub for cultural and creative professionals from all sectors. There is also a steam bath here with an original entrance design. \nThe view of Vogesenplatz in front of the signal box offers plenty of everyday scenes. At 2 pm\, the stalls of the weekly market are being dismantled\, but the square provides plenty of subjects with its seating areas and green spaces\, bridge\, spiral staircase\, Coop entrance\, tram stop with pergola\, passers-by and distinctive buildings. \nMeeting point: 2.00 pm at the St. Johann railway station tram stop\, under the roof of the old customs hall to the right of the Stellwerk. DESCRIPTION:At the kHaus\, the former main building of the Basel barracks on the banks of the Rhein in Kleinbasel (Link: kHaus)\, we?ll make ourselves comfortable in the ?Plaza? ? a passageway\, foyer and stairwell designed as a public living room (Link: Plaza). Here we can sketch the sculptural staircases\, the architecture and the interior design (Link: Architecture). We can sketch each other or take turns modelling briefly to warm up. Outside on the Rhein side\, with its cosy bistro\, the riverbank is a popular subject; people play boules and the Klingental ferry stops at its jetty. On the side facing the barracks courtyard\, the barracks grounds open up\, where\, in dry weather\, people always meet\, sit\, chat\, skateboard\, or whatever. \nMeeting point: at 2.00 pm in front of the entrance to the kHaus\, on the side facing the Rhein (Unterer Rheinweg\, see map). DESCRIPTION:Two days before the Morgestraich\, we visit the permanent exhibition on Basel Carnival at the Museum of Cultures. The historic rooms convey the carnival atmosphere. They are filled with mostly historical artefacts that give Basel Carnival its distinctive character.\nIt is fun to sketch these\, as it invites you to exaggerate and caricature. Children also have fun here. Link: information about the Basel Carnival exhibition \nParticipation by registration only.\nThe exhibition is located in an annex of the museum\, where space is limited. The number of participants and the length of stay are therefore restricted\, and registration with Herrat (email address: herrat-usk@bluewin.ch) is required.\nWe will form two groups. Up to 10 people per group will have one hour to visit the exhibition:\nGroup 1: 2:00?3:00 p.m.\nGroup 2: 3:00?4:00 p.m.\nThe first 10 registrations will be in the first group from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.\, and the following registrations will be in the second group. DESCRIPTION:We will meet from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the last time this year to sketch:\nat 2:00 p.m. inside the Basel SBB train station\, at the ?meeting point? in the ticket hall ?(Link) \nThere are many different motifs. For example\, on the footbridge to the left of the escalator\, there is a sheltered spot from where you can sketch passers-by or people taking a break on the seating islands\, or shops where travelers linger. The ticket hall itself is also a beautiful space with murals from the 1920s\, which can be seen clearly from the footbridge. The station is currently decorated for Christmas. Other motifs include the west wing\, the hall leading to the French station\, historically preserved rooms that are now used for retail\, and much more. \nWe will meet at 4 p.m. to view the finished drawings. We will decide where to meet on site.
